Kireçtaşlarının kontakt metamorfizmasıyla oluşan kalsit, piroksen ve diğer silikatlarla birlikte bol miktarda Lazurit (Na, Ca)8(AlSiO4)6(SO4,S,Cl)2 mineralini içeren mavi renkli, yarışeffaf-opak nitelikli kıymetli bir taştır.

"Gök mavisi taş","göklerin taşı" anlamına gelir. Bileşiminde, bol miktarda lazurit minerali, yani sodyum kalsiyum alüminyum silikat bulunur. Kireçtaşlarının başkalaşımı ile oluşur. Lacivert renkte olur. Diğer bir adı da "lacivert taşı" dır. Rengi, çıkarıldığı bölgelere göre farklılık gösterir. Sertliği 5 - 5,5 arasında değişir. Yarısaydam- mat ve yarı değerli bir süs taşıdır. Eski Mısır'da ve Hitit'te nazar boncuğu yapımında kullanılırmış.

eski mısır'da altın kadar değerli bulunmuş ve firavunlarca rağbet görmüş taş. tutankhamun'un ölüm maskındaki lacivert şeritler renklerini bu taştan almakta örneğin. günümüzde afganistan'daki binlerce yıllık madenlerden el yordamıyla çıkarılmaya devam etmekte.
