1. kitabın sonunda * vampir tanrıçası nyx tarafından hiçbir çaylak ya da vampirin sahip olmadığı 5 elementin * hepsine de hükmetme yeteneği verilen ve okulun başrahibesi neferet tarafından okuldaki vampir grubu "karanlık kızlar" ın başına getirilen zoey yeni erkek arkadaşı yakışıklı 5. sınıf öğrencisi * çaylak vampir sevgilisi erik ve ayrılmaz dostları country müzik sanatçısı Kenny Chesney hastası oda arkadaşı stevie rae, ne kadar ten renkleri birbirini tutmasa da ruh ikizi olan erin ve shaunee ve muhteşem bir kelime haznesine sahip olan damien ile okulun tadını çıkarmaya çalışırken eski hayatından tanıdığı kişilerin ölümleriyle sarsılır. üstelik bu ölümlerin arkasında her kim varsa suçluları gece evi nde ikamet edenleri göstermeye çalışmaktadır. bu olayın üstüne okulda da 2 çaylak ölmüştür. ayrıca zoey eski erkek arkadaşı heath i damgalamıştır. bir yandan bu sorunlarla uğraşan zoey aynı zamanda hiçbir çaylakta görülmeyen kan şehveti sorunun da üstesinden gelmek zorundadır. bir de üstüne en yakın arkadaşı stevie rae ölür. bütün bunlar yetmezmiş gibi eski sevgilisi heath de bazı kişilerce kaçırılır. bu durumda zoey karanlık kızların, eski başkanı öğrenciler arasında cehenmem cadısı olarak anılan aphrodite ile işbirliği yapmak zorundadır. zoey eski sevgilisini elementlerin yardımıyla kurtarır ve bu cinayetlerin ardında ölüp de bir şekilde yeniden dirilen çaylaklar olduğunu anlar. stevie rae de onlardan biri olmuştur. ölmesi gereken çaylakların dünyada olmasının nedeni neferet tir. şimdi bu sırrı sadece neferet in tehdit ettiği zoey ve olacak şeyleri görme gücü olan aphrodite bilmektedir. diğerlerinin güvenliği için bu sır onlara söylenmemelidir.
