Nations and Nationalism adlı ufak kitabı, özellikle siyaset biliminde deneyimli akademisyenlerce okutulan, milletlerin ve milliyetçiliğin oluşum sürecini başarıyla inceleyen yazardır. Postmodernizm konusuna da değinen, postmodernizm, islam ve us adlı kitabı yazarak islam dini ve radikal islam üzerine de araştırmalarını derlemiş olan Çek asıllı yazar, milliyetçilik çalışmalarıyla adından daha fazla söz ettirmiştir. 1925 yılında Paris'te doğmuş adından bir sosyal atropolog olarak söz edilen yazar 1995 yılında ölmüştür.

milliyetçilikle ilgili "nationalism is primarily a political principle that holds that the political and the national unit should be congruent" diyen yazar,milliyetçiliğin gerekli durumlarda yaratılan, modern dünya da ise sosyal gereklilik halini alan bir olgu olduğunu söylemektedir.
