birleşik devletlerin milli marşı olması bu efsane marşın "benimsemiş olduğum şahsi marşım" olmayacağı anlamına gelmiyor. bağıra bağıra, haykıra haykıra eşlik edilip, göğü yumruklayarak çılgınlar gibi mırıldanıp, emperyalist misin ulan pezevenk diyenlerin inadına daha bi yüksek sesle tekrar edilesidir. istemsiz olarak beğenimi almış, şahsımın milli marşı olarak tarihteki yerini almıştır.

3 mart 1931 tarihine kadar resmi milli marş olarak kullanılmamış, her 4 temmuzda dönemin ünlü şarkıcılarından birisi tarafından yorumlanan marştır. marş sözlerini francis scott key'in ingiliz kraliyet donanması'nın baltimore'daki mchenry kalesini bombardıman etmesinin ardından yazdığı şiirinden alır. özellikle leann rimes'tan dinlenilen versiyonu enfestir.
