1. 1898'de atlanta - georgia'da doğdu. doğumundan itibaren kördü. erken yaşlarda gitar öğrendi. 1927'de ilk plaklarını doldurdu. bir sürü takma ad kullandı. iyi bir gitarcıydı, sıcak bir vokali vardı. atlanta çevresinde 30'lu yıllar boyunca dolaşıp şarkı söyledi.
   
   genellikle, ustası olduğu 12 telli gitar kullanıyordu; birden çok gitar çalıyormuş gibi bir izlenim yaratabiliyordu. 1934'te evlendiği eşi kate'le düetler kaydetti. 1940'ta john lomax tarafından kongre kütüphanesi için kayıtları alındı. '40'lı yıllarda dini müziğe yöneldi. 1956'da yeniden keşfedilişinden kısa bir süre sonra müziği bırakma kararı aldı, bir kilisede papaz oldu. 1959'da beyin kanamasından öldü.
